The Mirage Big Game IV reel our tester used for one week at Turneffe Atoll, Belize, in October 2009 has a wide (1.25") and deep (1") large arbor that holds up to 200 yards of 30-pound Dacron (or much more gel-spun backing), and allows for one foot of line retrieve for each turn of the spool knob. This is the lightest big-game reel ever from Orvis (IV 6.9 oz), and its new sealed-drag housing and stacked-drag system far surpasses the previous Orvis Mach drag system, using instead floating carbon discs that do not warp under heavy stress by large game such as tarpon, permit, or billfish. The reels come in additional sizes for 9-11; 11-13; and 12-15 line weights. The largest holds 350 yards of 30-pound backing. Our tester said the 7/9 model was “right for light saltwater fish like bonefish, redfish, and snook, but also superb for freshwater bruisers like steelhead and salmon. The Mirage has a smooth inertia-free startup, and the spool is easy to unscrew and release. The sealed drag system made cleaning easy (rinse in fresh water) and should make for maintenance-free use.”www.orvis.com
