Hudson Dredging Approved by EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Dec. 5 approved clean-up dredging of the Hudson River near Ft. Edward, New York. The precedent-setting $460 million operation to clean the river of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) dumped over decades by General Electric will be the largest river-dredging project in U.S. history, removing 2.65 million cubic yards of contaminated river bottom, enough to cover 40 football fields with 30 feet of sediment. The plan approved by the Bush administration will have a 36-month design period. GE dumping over several decades contaminated over 200 miles of Hudson River bottom. Dick Surette (1935-2001)

Dick Surette, 66, the founder of Fly Tyer magazine, died at Memorial Hospital near his home in North Conway, New Hampshire, on Nov. 27. In 1969 Dick opened the Dick Surette Fly Shop in North Conway and later published his Trout and Salmon Fly Index loose-leaf book of fly patterns. In 1978 he published the first issue of Fly Tyer, a publication continued by Dick Stewart of North Conway until it was purchased by Joe Migliore and continued as American Angler, the founding publication of Abenaki Publishing.
