Thanks to the savvy folks at Smith Optics, you can now make planet-friendly moves while simultaneously sporting rock-star style.Backdrop frames, among 22 other “green” models in the Smith Evolve lineup, are part of the company’s program of sustainable manufacturing. All Evolve frames are made from the bio-based, nylon alternative Rilsan Clear—derived from castor seeds—and have similar resilience, density, and shape-memory properties to Smith’s nylon frames. Backdrops have spring hinges and slip-resistant Megol contact surfaces. Smith applies polarization by sandwiching the filter between two glass lens wafers, then aligning the lens axis to fully eliminate glare. “I prefer polarchromic copper lens tints for flats fishing, where seeing a cruising bone through wind chop, and in deeper water, is crucial to catching it,” said our tester. “Glass lenses have been panned in the past for their heaviness but Smith grinds its glass ultra-thin and these shades feel as light as plastic.” www.smithoptics.com
